Project description:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The project is based on the winning design of the international architectural and landscape design competition, awarded in 2017 to the team of Prof. Ing. arch. Ivan Ruller. The aim of the construction is to protect part of the city of Brno from flooding in a nature-friendly way, bring the river closer to the people, and enhance its recreational potential. The project addresses a section of the Svratka River between km 37.055 and 39.990 (from the Uheln\u00e1 railway bridge to the Riviera swimming pool area).<\/p>\n

According to the authors, the architectural design was further refined during the study. The flood protection of the city has been conceived as a nature-oriented modification of the watercourse, with the goal of creating a natural river channel within the urban environment. The original concept was enhanced by implementing a natural riverbed morphology, alternating shallow fords and deeper floodplain ponds, following the typology defined by M. \u0160indlar et al. (2012, Geomorphological Processes of Watercourse Development, Part I: Typology of Channel Forming Processes). The area features recreational elements such as pedestrian and bicycle paths, grassed embankments, gentle access points to the water, and preserved parts of the natural channel that are used wherever possible to meet the needs of rowers. The intention is to bring water closer to people and to re-establish their connection and relationship with the aquatic environment.<\/p>\n

A key architectural feature of the project is the so-called Colonnade, including an entrance pavilion that will serve as a meeting point for the public. The surroundings of the Colonnade are conceived as the architectural core of the Svratka River revitalization. Adjacent areas are designed with softened riverbanks or designated bathing spots. An innovative flood protection element is the use of glass retaining walls in selected sections. The most nature-based part of the design is located in the upper section of the river stretch, near the Riviera swimming pool, where the river widens, and a floodable wetland area is proposed.<\/p>\n

The project also includes significant modifications to the sewer system to protect the city from backflow during floods. These include engineering interventions on the main A and B drainage systems, which run parallel to the river. As part of the solution, relief chambers with gates and non-return valves were designed. The gates close during high water events, and in the case of intense rainfall, water is pumped back into the river using mobile pumps.<\/p>\n

In addition, the A drainage system has been fully reconstructed in the affected section, as its technical condition had deteriorated due to its original construction dating back to 1939. The updated master drainage plan also led to an optimized design, including an increased pipe diameter and a reduction in the need for pumping. This resulted in a more efficient solution with less spatial impact and improved performance.<\/p>\n
